Welcome to the website of the Department of Functional Materials.
We are pleased to introduce our team, our activities in various research areas and the technologies and methods used for that. Please find also our contributions to the education of engineers at the University of Bayreuth.
The Department of Functional Materials is part of the Faculty of Engineering Science at the University of Bayreuth.
Functional materials are materials that are used for their special properties, often being the heart of a component. Typical applications can be found in electrical engineering, optics, catalysis, sensors, energy storage and energy conversion, medical applications and many other areas.
Selected research highlights are:
1. Aerosol Deposition
Manufacturing of dense (functional) ceramic coatings without high temperature or vacuum processing and directly from the ceramic powder
2. Catalyst Status Diagnosis
Why measure the state of a catalyst always via the detour of the gas phase? By measuring the electrical properties of the catalyst during operation, one can determine directly the catalyst state!
Prominent examples are diesel particulate filter and three-way catalysts.
